Hello

Writing has been my life’s work. My journalism career spanned many decades. But these days, instead of “just the facts ma’am,” I’m loving the creative freedom to pen short stories, adult mysteries and even children’s picture books. When I’m not crafting curious characters, you’ll find me traveling with my husband or playing my ukulele in the Aloha Strummers band.

Children’s Picture Books

I’m honored that my picture book story titled Nature Awakens in the Spring won second place in the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators’ Art Day Contest last year. I’ve also penned two picture books with my daughter, Chelsea Thayer. Both are in the submission stage. See more on the Children’s Books tab.

Backyard Birder

As a nature lover, I’ve been writing The Backyard Birder blog for fifteen years. It’s read by bird enthusiasts worldwide. Popular posts include attracting birds with native plants, helping birds during the heat and when to rescue baby birds. A link to my newspaper columns can be found on the blog at jjthebackyardbirder.com.
