Waves of Deception
I’m excited to share my short story, “Waves of Deception,” that published September 30, 2025 in the Kelp Journal. The literary journal focuses on oceanic and surfing themes. The story was inspired by my son, Scott, who ends up being a hero in the end. He was also my consultant when it came to the surfing lingo. https://www.kelpjournal.com/post/fiction-waves-of-deception
Red Flag Warning
A wildfire raced up Saddleback Mountain on September 9, 2024. The photo above was the view from our back yard. Though our house was not in the path of the fire, we could smell the smoke. It felt too close to home.
The experience inspired my 100-word flash fiction piece, Red Flag Warning, published on June 13, 2025 online at https://www.fridayflashfiction.com/100-word-stories/red-flag-warning-by-jennifer-j-meyer
A Promise Kept
___
I’m excited that my flash fiction story A Promise Kept was published online at 101words.org on October 26, 2022. Though this piece is fiction, it was inspired by a customer who came into Wild Birds Unlimited when I was working alone a few years ago. She was shopping for a new hummingbird feeder. She moved slowly and I noticed sadness behind her steel blue eyes.
When I escorted her to the area where the feeders were displayed, she told me that her husband had recently passed away after a long illness. Before his death, he’d promised to find a way to let her know that he was on the other side.
The following link will take you to a flash fiction piece I wrote based on her experience. https://101words.org/a-promise-kept-2/
